PDF Download 2.1 extension for Firefox gets friendly with Internet Explorer

I’m extremely pleased to announce that our newly-released browser add-on for working better with Web-based PDF files — PDF Download 2.1 — is now fully compatible with Internet Explorer. PDF Download  works with Firefox 2 & 3, Flock 1, and Internet Explorer 7 & 8 (beta) web browsers.

It still amazes me just how many of you are using PDF Download. A quick look at our stats shows that for the past year there have been 8 million installations by Firefox users! And just last month we did almost 2 million PDF-to-HTML and Web-to-PDF conversions — a conversion rate that’s only going to increase more with IE users now gaining access.

If you’re not familiar with the PDF Download add-on, I’ll recap on why it exists and how it can be useful.

  • Stop crashes and hangs. PDF files are notoriously unreliable in Web browsers. PDF Download gives you extra preferences so you can control how PDFs are handled when you encounter them. You can view the size doing anything, set your browser to bypass the default PDF viewer, and more.
  • View PDF files faster. Reliability and stability is not the only issue. Just opening PDF files can take way too long. This is where the View as HTML feature helps speed things up quite a bit by displaying an HTML version of the PDF.
  • Save and share web pages. Grab copies of web pages that you can archive, share, and print. The best thing about our Web-to-PDF functionality is that, unlike the simple print-to-PDF style creators out there, PDF Download handles tables and CSS elegantly, resulting in PDFs that look virtually the same as the original web page. And best of all, hyperlinks remain active in the PDF version.

For existing users of the Web-to-PDF functionality, you’ll be pleased to hear that you can now control the page margins on the PDF files you create. By default they are set at zero, which makes the PDFs look good on screen, but if you want to print the PDF you might find controlling the margins is important to get better looking paper copies.
