Our PDF-to-Word service now free for everyone to use
We’ve just ended the invite-only beta program for our new free PDF-to-Word converter service, so if you missed out and are keen to start using it, head to the site now.
We’ve already talked quite a bit about what our PDF converter does and how much we think our service has raised the bar for accuracy, so today I thought I’d look at the flipside and highlight what our converter doesn’t do.
Our PDF-to-Word technology DOES NOT …
- Do fake tables. We rarely use tabs to force tabulated information into a proper layout. Wherever possible, we re-build the table from scratch to ensure the best layout and editability.
- Ignore text justification. We don’t left align all text. We use the correct left, right, center, and justify text alignment tools.
- Phony paragraphs. We don’t use line breaks to force text onto the next line, or text boxes to force blocks of text into position. We keep paragraphs editable and part of the on-page content.
- Merge text and images. Some PDF-to-Word converters unnecessarily merge images and text during conversion to try to produce better-looking output files. We separate text and images for enhanced editability, while retaining the same layout.
- Ignore headers/footers. Most PDF-to-Word converters ignore header and footer content and reformat it as a normal line of text on the page. Wherever possible, we detect headers and footers and recreate them using Microsoft Word’s Header and Footer tools.
We hope you enjoy using the service. If you do, please let your friends know about it as well.

OK. You say your PDF to Word program is now free for everyone to use. Sounds good, but I can't find a way to download the program.

March 16, 2009Hi GRSJr, it's a service, running on a web server — and can't be downloaded and installed. We will be incorporating the capabilities into the release of our next major Nitro PDF Professional release, which will work on the desktop.
March 16, 2009The conversion works great, but occasionally there are symbols that are inserted into the text which are not selectable. For instance, if a PDF contains +/- 10 where the +/- is the plus and minus sign stacked on top of one another, in the generated word document it doesn't seem the text is selectable although it's in the “correct” place in the file. How do you select this is Word? It seems to just float there.
March 16, 2009I am not able to download your free pdf to Word can you pl guide?
March 19, 2009This is a great new feature that will work very well in Nitro PDF. Look forward to seeing a new version of Nitro PDF with this in.
March 28, 2009Hi — I followed the easy 1-2-3 steps to convert a PDF to Word doc; however, I have not received an email with the converted file. I've checked my Junk folder, placed the no-reply@mail.pdftoword.com on my safe list, alerted my server tech to make sure the email wasn't getting trapped in the server spam filter. No luck. What's up and what's the expected turn time for converted files? Thanks.
April 2, 2009I converted a Chinese pdf file in PDF-to-Word service. Many words are not the original ones! Like every “義” becomes “罳”, every “尊” becomes “酥”, and so on. I hope developers can fix this problems. Thanks.
April 8, 2009Would you be able to send the PDF file to me at chris.dahl[at]nitropdf.com? We'll try and replicate it and work out why it's doing what it's doing.
April 8, 2009Just wrote about your free tool here- http://www.batipi.com/blog/convert-pdf-to-word-…
Thanks it worked great!
April 15, 2009Your software is friggin awesome. Nice job!
April 27, 2009I am having the same issue. I got a confirmation (success) page, but no e-mail. Hmmm…
April 28, 2009I have used the PDF – Word transformer & have received the files fine – but when I go into Word I cannot edit the text. What do I need to do?
May 12, 2009I have converted 4 files from PDF to Word but when I open them in Word I can't edit anything. What should I be doing?
May 12, 2009Bugsy123, could you email me a copy of one of the Word files? I can see if I experience the same problem. Send it to richard DOT crocker AT nitropdf.com
May 12, 2009Hi.
Congratulations for this GREAT tool. I was really surprised how fine this service works.
Here a few remarks about features, which do not work 100% yet:
- Mathematical formulas are converted pretty good, but the bounding box around the formula seems too small. Sometrimes the lower or upper half of the formula is missing. Additionally, the vertical spacing gets confused in a two-column layout (e.g. formula in the left column distorts vertical spacing in the right column).
- Images embedded in CMYK-colorspace are not converted into RGB properly (image is correct, but colors are wrong)

May 19, 2009Hi.
Congratulations for this GERAT service. I'm really surprised how good it works.
A few comments on things that don't work 100% yet:
- Formulas are converted pretty good, but the bounding box around them seems too small sometimes. The lower or upper half of a formula is cut off sometimes. Also, the layout gets a bit confused in two-column layouts. If there's a formula e.g.in the left column (where some parts are missing after the conversion), the text in the right column also gets cut off at the same vertical position.
- The color conversion for images embedded in CMYK-format does not work. The image in the word document itself is correct, but the colors are not right.

May 19, 2009I love your PDF to Word converter. I have compared your product to several others and have found yours to be head and shoulders above the rest.
June 4, 2009I have just tried your PDF to Word conversion program for the first time. It uploads my file fine, but then says “The PDF file you have submitted is password protected and cannot be opened for converting You must remove the open password from the PDF prior to submitting it to our service”. I can open the PDF in Adobe Reader without entering a password, and I can then copy the text and paste it into Notepad or Word. What is your program complaining about, and how can I get it to convert my document?
Thanks – Rowan
June 10, 2009I just tried your service. Frankly, I wasn't expecting much, given how I'd been struggling to get other things to import or convert a 180 page document that was nothing but tables. I'd spent HOURS trying various things, along with various manual editing, without getting anything acceptable. Then I found this site and your tool. I am… blown COMPLETELY away. It was EXACTLY what I needed, and converted the entire thing PERFECTLY! I cannot thank you enough!

December 2, 2011Hi John,
Very sorry to hear that your file was not in your inbox. At times we have higher-than-normal traffic levels. Could you please check your Spam folder to make sure it didn’t show up there? I’d really appreciate it if you could try to convert your file again. Another option would be to download Nitro Pro for a 14-day free trial and convert as many files as you need. Thanks for the feedback John!
Cheers,
